Everything Sucks Club: The Crayon Project
All stationery club subscriptions benefit The Crayon Project for the 1st quarter of 2023. They are a nonprofit providing schools & organizations across the U.S. with multicultural art supplies.
Growing up as a white child, I never had to worry about how I was going to color my own skin tone in drawings. I never remember having to search very hard to find a pale, peachy-pink color to represent myself. This isn’t the case for a lot of BIPOC children.
Back in 2020, Crayola released it’s first pack of multicultural colors (full disclosure, Crayola first started introducing multicultural tones in 1992, however the pack of the dedicated range wasn’t created until 2020). These packs are available as crayons, markers, colored pencils and paint in 24 shades designed to match 40 skins tones (when colors are blended). They have since released abbreviated packs of 8 colors.
Shortly after the Crayola launch, The Crayon Project was created in response to the various acts of social injustice that was happening around the world. The founders, Beth Ann and Kevin Bligh decided the best way for them to help and bring awareness to the cause was to buy the multicultural supplies and donate them within their own community. Since 2020, they grew from a local, grass roots effort to a nationwide 501c3 nonprofit organization.

The Crayon Project’s mission is to reinforce that hatred is not inherited; it is something that is learned. It’s time that we as a society reinforce with children that it doesn’t matter what skin color you are; you are a human being and worthy of respect and dignity. -The Crayon Project Mission Statement

Through donations, they are able to ship supplies to schools and other nonprofits all over the United States. Teachers or representatives of a nonprofit simply fill out a request form on their website at no cost to them. All kit costs and shipping fees are covered by donors to The Crayon Project.

I think this small nonprofit fits beautifully into the mission of my monthly clubs and I can’t wait to see what impact we can help them make!
